Foundation Educators’ Award

Gift makes Fley Family Scholarship possible

Posted on: August 7, 2015

A late Milford alumna and daughter of a former superintendent has made it possible to further the educational dreams of students for years to come thanks to a posthumous gift to the Milford Schools Foundation.

On June 30, the Foundation received a donation of $100,000 from the estate of Jo Ann Fley, a 1948 MHS graduate and daughter of former Milford superintendent James Fley, in order to establish the Fley Family Scholarship Fund.

Ms. Fley, who was one of the very first honorees at the Foundation’s inaugural Night of the Stars in 2010, passed away on Oct. 15, 2014 at her home in Urbana, Illinois.

It was after that evening in 2010, the first of the Foundation’s annual alumni recognition dinners, that Ms. Fley saw a chance to give back to a community that had given her a start, said long-time friend and trustee Dorothy Bell.

Dorothy Bell, trustee of the estate of Jo Ann Fley, presents a check for $100,000 to Foundation chairwoman Mary Anne Will.

“Back in 1991, when her dad, former Milford Schools Superintendent James H. Fley died, Jo Ann tried to establish a scholarship fund at Milford High School honoring him, her mother and her stepmother,” Bell said. Even after the district said it was unable to staff or manage such a program, Fley continued to nurture the idea.

“When Jo Ann learned of the formation of the Milford Schools Foundation in 2010, she set about having her trust amended to include the Foundation as a beneficiary,” Bell said.

After graduating from Milford, Ms. Fley earned a B.A. in history and graduated magna cum laude in 1952 from Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio. She received an M.A. in history in 1953 from the University of Wyoming and a doctorate in student personnel administration and higher education from Teachers College, Columbia University, in 1964.

During her 32-year career at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, she served as assistant dean of women (1960-64) and as a professor of higher education (1965-1992).

“We are humbled by Jo Ann’s great regard for our organization and we are grateful to be able to honor her wishes by establishing the Fley Family Scholarship,” said Foundation President Mary Anne Will. “Her gift will help us continue building a great tradition of supporting Milford students, both during and after their time in Milford schools.”

“Milford always has had a very special place in Jo Ann’s heart,” Bell said. “She was a person with a generous spirit who gave so much to so many. Jo Ann’s bequest to Milford Schools Foundation to establish a fund in the Fley family’s name is just one more effort on her part to help people realize their dreams through education.”

The Milford Schools Foundation and its Board of Directors extend its deepest sympathy to the family of Jerri Curry Lee. Jerri was appointed to the Board in early 2014. During that time many of her efforts were behind the scenes, but indelible. Our hope is Jerri’s family finds comfort in their memories of a kind, energetic, gracious lady.

Halcomb awarded first Imbus Family Scholarship

Posted on: February 15, 2015

A Milford High School graduate and University of Cincinnati engineering student is the first recipient of a new scholarship administered by the Milford Schools Foundation.

Matthew Halcomb, a pre-junior at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, was recently awarded a $2,500 Imbus Family Scholarship to continue his studies in civil engineering.

The scholarship was made possible by a large donation to the Foundation from John Imbus and family. Imbus has agreed to donate $25,000 annually to the Milford Schools Foundation, up to $100,000 maximum, for the purpose of funding scholarships for students pursuing a degree in civil engineering. Up to five scholarships will be awarded annually to eligible students enrolled at the University of Cincinnati or Ohio State University. Imbus is a class of 1959 graduate of Milford High School.Â

“The Milford Schools Foundation is grateful to John Imbus and his family for entrusting this donation to us,” said Foundation President Mary Anne Will. “This gift will enable us to continue the Foundation’s mission of enhancing and enriching the education of Milford students, both during and after their time in Milford schools.”

Halcomb said he was thankful to be the first recipient of the Imbus scholarship.

“This scholarship has helped me tremendously with my schooling. Thanks to the Imbus Family Scholarship, I did not need to take out a loan this semester,” he said. “I even had enough money from this scholarship to purchase several books for my classes that are not included in the tuition. This will help great in the long run as I won’t have to have a part time job during this semester to help pay for these things and can devote more time to homework and studying.”
